March 19, 2009

At a news conference today at an elementary school in Framingham, Gov. Deval Patrick announced that he plans to use $168 million in federal economic stimulus funds to supplement Chapter 70 school aid next year.

The governor’s state budget bill, filed in January, would level-fund the Chapter 70 education aid account at $3.95 billion and level-fund distributions to individual school districts.

The supplemental funds announced by the governor would be paid to 166 of the state’s 437 school districts to ensure that all districts reach the “foundation” level of spending next year. The number of districts receiving supplemental aid would have been higher except for a provision proposed by the governor in his fiscal 2010 budget bill that would accelerate the required municipal contribution to the school budget for a number of cities and towns.

Announcements of the allocation of federal funds directly to school districts through the Title I and the IDEA programs are expected over the next several days.
