Cam Neely with the Stanley CupThis past spring, Hall of Fame hockey player Cam Neely finally won the Stanley Cup – in his first year as president of the Boston Bruins.

As a player, “Bam-Bam Cam” was a coach’s dream and a fan favorite, displaying a unique combination of toughness and talent during 13 seasons in the National Hockey League, 10 of those with the Bruins. At 6-1 and more than 200 pounds, Neely was considered the NHL’s first “power forward.” A five-time All Star, his scoring prowess placed him among the game’s elite – names like Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Brett Hull.

Originally from British Columbia, Neely had three 50-goal seasons in Boston, including 1993-94, when he scored 50 goals in just 49 games while battling injuries. He averaged at least one point per game during seven seasons and was only the second player in Bruins history to record back-to-back 50-goal seasons.

In 1994, Neely won the NHL’s Bill Masterton Trophy as the player who best exemplified the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Neely was slowed by knee and hip injuries for several years before he was forced to retire after the 1995-96 season at age 31. In 726 NHL games, he had 395 goals and 299 assists for 694 total points and 1,256 penalty minutes. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005.

In the fall of 2007, Neely rejoined the Bruins as the team’s vice president. He was elevated to president in June 2010.

Neely is known as one of the most visible retired athletes in the Boston area, making many appearances on behalf of charitable organizations. He is president of the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care, which, in 1997, opened the doors to the Neely House, a home away from home for cancer patients and their families while the patient is undergoing treatment at New England Medical Center in Boston.

More than $14 million has been raised and spent on efforts associated with the Neely Center for Clinical Cancer Care, the Neely Cell Therapy and Collection Center; the Neely Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit; and the Michael Neely Center for Brain Tumor Care and Research.

Neely has made a handful of appearances on television and in movies, including a stint as a hockey-playing firefighter on friend Denis Leary’s series “Rescue Me.” He had cameos in the movies “Stuck On You” and “Dumb & Dumber” as the character Sea Bass.

Neely and his wife, Paulina, have two children and live in the Boston area.
