Competitive Surface Transportation Program

Total Funding Available: $1.5 billion

Overview
This program includes competitive grants to state and local governments and transit agencies for surface transportation projects, which will have a significant impact on the nation, a metropolitan area, or region. Funding can be used for any eligible program under the Surface Transportation Program including highway, transit, freight and passenger rail, and port infrastructure projects. Grants will range from $20 million to $300 million, with some waivers for smaller cities.

• No matching funds required.
• Priority is to be given to projects for which the federal share is needed to complete the project funding.
• Priority given to projects that can be completed within three years.
• Periodic reports to the Federal Transit Administration that include information on spending and job creation will be required.

How to Access Funding
The Secretary of the Federal Highway Administration will release the criteria for the funding no later than May 18, 2009. Applications will be available within 180 days after release of the criteria, and projects will be selected no later than February 17, 2010.
